Wood flooring has been used for centuries. It started with rough sawn boards straight onto the earth, to help keep us clean, and dry. This then moved to a system of keeping the logs off the ground, then the decoration of wood started to become an art form called Intarsia, or Marquetry.
Marquetry is centuries old. It is the process of creating pictures out of materials such as shell, stone, and wood.
A form of this called Intarsia involved cutting pieces of veneered wood and placing them into solid wood. This method gradually disappeared, around the 14th century, a new technique: tarsia geometrica was developed, this was the first Marquetry panel- covering the entire surface with veneered wood in a decorative way.
Marquetry became popular in France in the 15th century, and before long, marquetry was being called for not just in works of art, furniture, and walls, but on floors. This is where Parquetry flooring has its origins.
